Project’s highlights
This project included the out-of-service inspection of three large tanks at Defense Fuel Support Point Hakozaki, Japan, which is part of NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Yokosuka. Each of the 85-year-old tanks were mined out of the rock island that makes up the terminal and have a capacity of over 200,000 Bbl.
Prior to inspection, EEI, with the support of its local mechanical subcontractor, OYO Pacific, performed safe confined space entry into the tanks and cleaning. EEI self-performed floor scans with an advanced magnetic flux leakage (MFL) scanner, with prove-up of detected indications using phased array ultrasonic (PAUT) scanners with dual linear-array probes. This methodology is specially designed for quantifying and mapping corrosion. EEI also used PAUT techniques on an extensive inspection of the tank shells.
Once the inspections were complete, EEI delivered the inspection report with suitability for service evaluation. Additionally, the tank repair documents were developed and submitted. EEI is currently providing on site construction oversight of the repair effort.
